From the wikipedia article on Shamil Basayev, the dead Islamic Fundamentalist Chechen leader:
Basayev later said during his career, he and his battalion had only lost once, and that defeat came in Karabakh in fighting against the “Dashnak battalion”.
The most depressingly named intersection I’ve seen recently: where Cargo Drive meets Commercial Vehicle Drive.
There’s a new Golden Compass trailer up. While the story has apparently been messed up and London seems a bit too tidy for London, the overall look of the movie is very, very cool. Very Steam, but without steam or smoke.
It would be hillarious to have standard movie trailer guy do the cliche voiceover: In a world where a corrupt church investigates the relationship between elementary particles and Original Sin by destroying the souls of children, one brave little girl, her daemon, and a plucky bear embark on an adventure that will warm your hearts.
So, you want to be a dad? You can practice. Here’s one way:
1. Take an incontinent, feral racoon.
2. Declaw it.
3. Give it a tea party and try to teach it to dance a reel in your lap.
Sar took me to Donguri for my birthday. The food and service were fantastic and I love Japanese food, so it was a great find. A highlight was our discovery of the best Japanese appetizer that I’ve had recently: sweet corn tempura. Sweet corn tempura combines the subtle Japanese appetizer with the hillbilly appeal of fried sweet corn. Yee haw.
My friend Nick is in town to exhibit a hut at the Copper-Hewitt National Design Museum. Yes, a hut:

This hut will be shown as part of Copper-Hewitt’s exhibition Design for the Other 90% an exhibit of ways in which design can be used to serve people not normally reached by professional designers. I saw the point immeidately. Yesterday, I stopped by the MOMA Design Store on the way to the train and a delightful orange leather business card case. I didn’t get it, but boy was it sweet. It’s the sort of thing that my friends and I would certainly tend to think of when they think design: fashion, coffee makers, kitchen gadgets, etc. Most people don’t need that: Most people need someone who can do something with PVC that will totally hook them up with crops or a decent place to live or a new way to get around with cargo.
The hut is used by the Mad Housers to house Atlanta-area homeless. I support them and I think their site is worth checking out. They use cool design in a very basic way to meet a real human need for people who could use a hand and who just won’t end up being served by other shelter groups and they are a small enough group that you know your donations or support time goes right to the people who need it.
One cool footnote to the whole thing is what really ends selling the homeless on the shelter. As Nick puts it, “I would have thought it was the roof or the warmth, but when they find out that the door locks, that’s what makes them want it.”
